Home to more than 4,000 fascinating species, including some of the rarest members of the animal kingdom, San Diego Zoo has rightfully earned its place as one of the top tourist attractions in Southern California. The zoo's most enduring attractions include features like:
•Africa Rocks, spotlights the amazing biodiversity found on the African continent
Panda Trek, featuring China's Giant Panda
• Elephant Odyssey, home to Asian and African elephants
• Urban Jungle, where you can visit the zoo’s giraffes and rhinos
• Australian Outback, home to koalas, kangaroos, and more from the land down under
• Northern Frontier, where you can watch the polar bears play or meet a reindeer
• Discover Outpost, featuring a petting paddock and playground for the kids to play
Of course, there's also a wealth of animal shows, guided tours, and informative exhibits to satisfy your curiosity and provide fun for the whole family. The Panda Trek is another of the zoo's longtime favorites, educating visitors on fascinating facts about the natural habitats of these giant endangered bears. The San Diego Zoo is working with the Chinese government to help save the natural home of these majestic animals as part of an ongoing effort to bolster their numbers in the wild. Wonders of the land down under come to life at the Australian Outback exhibit, where guests make their way through an authentic eucalyptus grove to get up-close-and-personal views of wildlife including wallabies, kookaburras, cockatoos, Tasmanian devils, and much more! The Outback is one of the park’s newest exhibits and has drawn particularly rave reviews, combining a lively atmosphere with the unforgettable spectacle of koalas, the largest colony outside of Australia.
You'll also want to visit the Elephant Odyssey attraction, where elephants, jaguars, and California condors live in settings that are virtually identical to their natural habitats. At various times throughout the day, you may even be able to observe a keeper training session at the Elephant Care Center. Adding an educational angle to the exhibit are replicas of these animals' now-extinct predecessors, giving context to the exhibit and unlocking the gates of imagination.
